MISSION, VISION, VALUES

MISSION:

The mission of Freshwater Project is to provide clean water and sanitation services to the rural communities of Malawi through the construction of sustainable water points, sanitary facilities and community based management training.

VISION:

Our vision is a healthy community with sustainable water and sanitation facilities for ALL Malawians.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Improve access to potable water
  • Reduce the incidences of waterborne diseases
  • Reduce the distance that people must travel to fetch water
  • Empower the communities to be managing their water and sanitation facilities

AREAS OF FOCUS:

WATER:

Our top priority is to provide clean water through borehole drilling, rehabilitation of broken wells, shallow well construction and spring protection.

SANITATION:

Waterborne diseases are also caused by the lack of proper sanitation. Therefore, Freshwater incorporates the Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) approach and constructs sanitary facilities and also provides hygiene education and sanitation promotion (HESP) training to the communities.

FOOD SECURITY:

To address this concern for food security, Freshwater constructs windmill and solar powered irrigation systems designed to water crops year round, and also promotes kitchen gardens that help to provide food to the communities throughout the year. In addition, crops can be sold to raise funds for the maintenance of the water point.

VALUES:

  • Community participation, ownership and empowerment.
  • Financial transparency and accountability.
  • Key stakeholders involvement – such as government, partner agencies, and community members.

LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE:

The trap of poverty is that it prevents people from planning into the future. How can I worry about tomorrow’s food security, when I am hungry today? By providing the basic needs within a community and guaranteeing some support, you empower the community to think beyond the immediate need and to work towards a brighter future for all Malawians.
